Why water activity measurements matter
Water activity (aw) is the measurement that truly predicts shelf life and flavor – far better than moisture percentage. Water activity controls both safety and freshness:
- Below 0.60 aw: No risk of mold – beans keep for years.
- 0.60–0.70 aw: Risk zone.
- Above 0.70 aw: High risk of mycotoxins. Too low aw (~0.30) breaks down the fine acids and sugars that give coffee life and complexity. Moisture percentage never tells this story. With W1 you get the full picture (0.05–0.99 aw) in minutes – anywhere – and can protect both bag and cup throughout the entire process from green coffee to roasting and storage.
Take control of your coffee quality
With CoffMeter W1 you can quickly assess water activity and make decisions based on hard data. Perfect for:
-
Farmers and traders — Quick quality control in the field or warehouse to avoid losses and maximize value.
-
Professional roasters — Ensure consistent shelf life and freshness batch after batch.
-
Cafés and enthusiasts — Easy assessment of beans from different suppliers for optimal storage and brewing.
Convince with precise data: Traditional methods or moisture meters don’t give the full picture. With W1’s laboratory accuracy and portable design, you can handle your coffee with confidence – order today and protect flavor and safety on a whole new level!
Frequently Asked Questions
How to calibrate?
- Prepare saturated salt solution at least 1 hour in advance using the included vial.
- Pour solution into the sample container so the bottom is covered (including undissolved salt).
- Place the container in the magnetic, liquid sample tray.
- Attach the main unit and turn it on.
- Select “Calibrate.” The process takes about 5 minutes.
- Remove the container, clean it, and store the solution for next time.
Is CoffeeOS free?
Yes – for private users, CoffeeOS is always free.
Does it work for other sample types?
Yes, including rice, wheat, corn, and more.
What distinguishes W1 from Omix and other water activity meters?
Both W1 and Omix use advanced algorithms for fast, precise measurements. Omix employs the leading chilled-mirror dew-point method and provides results in about 30 seconds plus many more features (moisture, density, color, etc.). W1 uses moisture-based detection, which is a bit slower (about 2 minutes) but still significantly faster than traditional alternatives – and focuses purely on water activity at a more accessible price.
